Default Hyundai Genesis Coupe Concept: Car and Driver

Hyundai uses the Genesis rear-wheel-drive game plan to create a coupe. Will it become the next Tiburon?

BY ERIK JOHNSON, October 2007

First came the trust-us-it-won’t-break warranty. Then came products that were actually good. Now Hyundai’s pulling out all the stops and trying to make cars for real enthusiasts.

What you see here is the first look—albeit very impressionistic—at a shot across the bow of sports coupes of all stripes, from the Ford Mustang to the Infiniti G37 to the BMW 3-series. Could this seemingly stylish concept become the next Tiburon?

We don’t know for sure if the Genesis name will stick. We’d prefer Tiburon. But at least this vehicle has the power being put down in all the right places, specifically, the two rear wheels. The current Tiburon, the only ride in Hyundai’s lineup that’s even remotely a “sports car,” is front-wheel drive only.

Thrust could come from Hyundai’s first V-8, which debuted in the rear-drive Genesis sedan concept at the 2006 New York auto show, but a V-6 is more likely to be the top engine choice in the interest of keeping the price down.

As long as what’s under the hood can motivate this car quickly enough to justify the sporty looks, we’ll be more than happy to stop counting at six. Look for the Genesis coupe concept to take its first public bow at November’s L.A. auto show.

I know this was oct 2007, but i think its funny when these guys get stuff so wrong even when accurate information is easily attainable from respectable sources.

Some web sites still insisted the V8 was going to be an option even after the debut, and others posted that the genesis was confirmed to be the replacement for the tiburon, even after the LA autoshow.

Grrrr, lol
